The discussion mentions two theories that pertain to the family and the function of the family. I would like to consider Dorothea Orem’s Self Care Deficit Theory. This theory claims that nursing care is needed when a person experiences some health issue that causes an inability to care for self (Friberg & Creasia, 2016). Caring for a person who is unable to care for self creates a situation type stress on the family unit. Family members may be forced to take on new and or additional roles to assist with the care of an ill loved one (Potter, Perry, Stocker & Hall, 2017). A change of family roles will create an additional stress which may create a lack of continuity in the family unit.

current situational crisis and the root of the crisis. Understanding the cause of the crisis will better prepare the nurse to help relieve pressure of caring for the ill loved one. It may be important to ensure the stability of the client, address what ails the family, then teach the family how to support and maintain the ill mother and family unit. Susie having an understanding of being a part of a “sandwich generation” will also relieve some stress (Potter et al., 2017).
